The message from this ad is very clear and straight-forward, Dos Equis is for interesting men. How this message is conveyed and the man behind the message are what makes this ad so powerful. To start with the audience, the message is to be read by anyone in the drinking community who takes pride in looking good (clean clothes, no wrinkles, well groomed). The assumption of the most interesting man in the world being the speaker gives credibility to the message immediately. Any well groomed man can appreciate some advice from the "most-interesting" man in the world. Now the most interesting and complex part of this ad is the message. The top layer of the message simply says that boring men wear pleated khakis and buy mild salsa. This satirical comment on boring men persuades the reader to not buy mild salsa and no wear pleated khakis. These are things that are associated with boring men and not the most interesting man in the world therefore we should strive to be more like our most interesting man in the world and not buy these items. On another note, there is an extreme level of credibility developed buy this message. The beautiful women, fine clothing, and cigar make the man seem very established and by adding Dos Equis into the mixture it takes in the social status of the fine clothes and cigar. These things develop Ethos for the reader. We trust this man. We trust what this man has to say. We trust that this is the most interesting man in the world. The end result from all of these peripheral factors is that buying Dos Equis makes you a more interesting man. We all want to be more interesting(stereotypically) and this will help us become that more interesting man.

  1. Okay Patrick. So it's a good ad. But I'll want you guys to become more critical as we move forward. Don't just accept every ad you're given. Keep questioning. Keep thinking. Nice post overall!
