End of Semester

This class was very fun for me and I really enjoyed the different styles of writing that we did. The different varieties of assignments were always fun and interesting. I learned a lot about my writing and how to improve it. This was a really fun experience. Goodbye community

For some reason I could not get my pictures into my movie even with the help of CCIT so here is a picture of my alphabet soup....

Introductory Comma

I'm not sure if this is still available but I found an introductory comma on the wrapping of my water bottle in study hall. Right after the words "On average".

Here is the Rough Draft of my paper.

Reality

Reality is not something that is tangible or can be defined for a large group of people. Reality differs from person to person from day to day. It is dynamic and constantly shifting. Reality is what we find to be the most real and live pieces of our days whether it be the sun or the bottle of water on your desk. I think an interesting parallel to this assignment is the movie Inception. The movie consists of different layers of dreams but the individual is still in his or her "reality" throughout the movie. Even though the individual is not in reality that is often misunderstood by people as being the things that are tangible, common, and clear, they are still very much in a reality as all of their actions have very real consequences and they are in very real danger. Diane Arbus was absolutely in reality because these were the images or people that were most alive to her. This makes plenty of sense because these people live by a different set of circumstances and rules and to not hold true to standardized rules and guidelines. Everyday for them is a new experiment without safety or calculated risks. Merriam-Webster defines reality as the quality or state of being real. This is absolutely correct as long as the word real is not misinterpreted. Real is an opinion not a fact. Real is not something that a group can decide on it is a very personal opinion. What may seem real to me may seem ridiculous to someone else. When interpreting someone else's work it is very important to understand that you are on the outside looking in at their reality and not to judge too quickly and carefully absorb all of the facts.

Organization

Facebook is organized by most frequently visited posts or updates to least frequently visited posts or updates. The point of this is that people are most likely interested in what other people have been doing so if people have all frequented the same update then more than likely you will find it interesting as well. Facebook's organization is unique in that it can also be adjusted to what people have done most recently and be organized chronologically.

Statue

This is the statue outside of Tillman Hall, the oldest building in the campus here. It is of Thomas Green Clemson, the founder of Clemson. He is in the same posture as Abraham Lincoln in the Lincoln memorial and it creates a stoic atmosphere for the the presentation of the statue. It gives off a very serious and disciplined tone to its surroundings.

Questions

1. Do people shy away from overly sexual advertising?

2. How can sexual advertising cover different products in different fields?

Website Design

To start with the bad, we have www.siphawaii.com

There is too much wrong with this website to fit into a blog so I will focus on the glaring issues at hand. There is absolutely zero negative space in this design. Every inch of the page is covered in some sort of text or complex image and our eyes have no logical place to fall into focus. Such as I discussed on the Time magazine cover, there are no angles or balances to lead our eyes to a central point so we are lost looking at a big blur of junk without actually seeing anything. Also the entire page is in the brown hue or tint and it further adds to the plop of text and images thrown on the page as it all blurs together. Another interesting rhetorical shortcoming of the designer of this eyesore site is that every few lines or images talks about some sort of special sale and if everything is on a special sale, nothing is actually on sale. This page is saturated with sale opportunities, text, and the color brown.

Next we have a wonderfully designed site, www.wendys.com

This website has a very strong and standard design template. The outside border of the site is a general earth tone to not distract the reader but centralize the reader's eyes to the middle of the page. Now the cups on the left side create angles towards the center piece of paper that most likely contains the message of the website. The right side of the page uses distinct colors on smaller, individual advertisements for the site while not disturbing the balance created by the left side of the site. Immediately upon looking at the site, it is very clear that the designer is Wendy's as it is clearly identified in the top left corner without too much clutter or distraction. This website has tremendous balance between background "negative space" and the important pieces of the image. This is true even inside the middle box as the background behind the cups, middle box, and right side advertisements is placed very out of focus and of very mellow cool colors.

Magazine Cover

The passive blue background immediately creates a sympathetic or passive lens through which we will be viewing the magazine cover. That giant expanse of light blue surrounding the text and fish head also refer to the expanse of the ocean and how we should all be open, sympathetic, to hearing this argument. Blue is a color usually associated with the beauty of nature and calmness leading us towards a serious article but not serious in a sense of intensity but a sense of deep focus and attention must be payed to this topic. All of the angles and lines of the picture seem to slant towards the middle, such as the fish head and the gradient shortening of the first three lines of text, to emphasize the most important piece of information the cover is giving us, "Can farming save the last wild food?" This question is clearly the emphasis of not only the magazine cover but also the article. The fish is also depicted in the "fish out of water" state, hinting that the fish, or fish in general, is struggling for survival. The cover, and the article, lead us to believe that there is hope for fish and that is very possible for a comeback and continued survival. The problem presented is obviously very somber as a "recent report by the International Programme on the State of the Ocean found that the world's marine species faced threats 'unprecedented in human history.'" The links between the text and the cover continue as the articles funnels itself into a very somber conversation on the future of fish. And just as the cover gave us hope the article ends with "aquaculture can be one more step toward saving ourselves". The rhetorical devices used on the cover of the article act as an exemplary introductory paragraph on this case as we are prepared to read the article upon viewing the cover.

Freewrite

Sex sells and it always will. Everywhere in the world and in everyday life sex sells. From old spice ads to clothes to cars. Mainstream media is drowned in beautiful women and sexual entices. Every day people see ads on tv or in stores where sexual appeal is the only driving force and the most amazing thing is that they work. We see a beautiful woman and associate what she is wearing or doing with beauty. The Old Spice man has nothing to do with Old Spice except he is the stereotypical perfect male appearance and Old SPic slaps their name on top and now Old Spice is associated with perfect men. When we see shoe commercials on tv, the advertisement is more focused on the beautiful people than the actual shoe product. What would advertising be without sex? How would a company react if they were told to market their product using the product's features? Can it be done or is advertising simply manipulating the viewer into associating two normally separate things to create a false connection.

Does it Suck?

  • Elephants suck. They are big, clumsy, and do very little with their daily lives and I forgot exactly which political party this pertains too so it sucks that I can't remember that.
  • Mr. Obama doesn't suck. Mr. Obama was given some unideal circumstances to work with as a president and although we all may not agree with him, he has done a decent job.
  • Harry Potter doesn't suck. He is my boy and I love these movies because what isn't cool about being able to do all of that "magical" stuff.
  • Mac doesn't suck. I just recently got a Mac and it is much faster and has many more features and shortcuts to make a more user friendly PC.
  • Star Wars doesn't suck. Star Wars is one of the greatest movie sets of all time and like Harry Potter, all of the "magical" stuff is awesome.
  • Facebook doesn't suck. Facebook is  great social network for staying in touch and sharing media such as pictures and movies.
  • McDonalds sucks. The food they cook there is horrible in so many different ways, ranging from bad tasting to bad for you.
  • Clemson doesn't suck. Clemson is a great school and so far I love going here because of the great family atmosphere.
  • Lady Gaga sucks. Her music is horrible and she is nothing but the next teenage girl fad that will phase out in 18-24 months.
  • Justin Bieber sucks. He is worse than Lady Gaga in that he won't last another 18-24 months and people will forget about him before that.
  • Sudoku doesn't suck. They are a great easy way to pass time in an airport or in a boring class.
  • Avatar doesn't suck. The visual effects in that movie and how spot on the computer animation was brought us seamlessly into an imaginary world.
  • Xbox doesn't suck. Playing video games is a great way to kill time at night with some friends although you need to do your work first.
  • American Idol sucks. Why should their be a show about being trying to become a singer when we already have thousands that we know are good at singing?
  • Glee sucks. I have never watched this show but the concept of a musical on television seems to waste the whole idea behind television.
  • Cigarettes suck. They are extremely unattractive and once you get stuck on them it is very hard to fight your way off.
  • Guns don't suck. I make this statement because there is a place in the world for weapons, we just need to be more responsible with them.
  • Abortion doesn't suck. Abortion is a personal choice although it should come with specific circumstances and not be a public practice.
  • This interestingly dressed dog doesn't suck. I actually find this picture kind of humorous, almost abiding with incongruity theory discussed today.

Writing Process

The writing process for me is something that changes as often as the weather. One day it can be easy and free flowing onto the page and the next I will be completely at a stand still and feel like everything I write is forced and not coming out naturally. For me, writing is usually something that tends to eat up time. I will sit down to write and before I know it all of my time is gone and so is most of my paper. I can write in almost any environment but usually it will affect my end result. If I am writing in a busy, noisy, crowded room, my writing will most often be very jumbled and have no steady flow or rhythm. I try to isolate myself when I write so it is just me and my computer doing the work although it never usually ends up like that. Another important aspect of the writing process for me is the snack food that is accompanying me. I usually like to have a large glass of water on a towel, so the water doesn't sweat onto any of papers of course, and a small assortment of decadent delights. I prefer to have some junior mints and maybe a pop-tart to add some substance to the snacking. If I ever encounter a writer's black, I have a few go to steps for how to end these small plights before they become serious. First I always refill my water glass and restock on snacks. If that doesn't do the trick then I will go on Facebook, sounds kind of anti-productive but it works for me. And lastly I will take a shower. Taking a shower has always helped me relax and this is no different. If after my shower, I still can't write then I put it up and come back to it at another time.

Plagiarizing

Mr. B,
I promise I will not plagiarize on my paper because it is simply wrong. Plagiarizing is stealing and dishonest. No one has ever made it anywhere in life by taking shortcuts and finding the easy way out and this is no different. These papers are our original works and we should take pride in our work. There is great satisfaction to a job well done and that is the greatest reward from the work we do and by stealing someone else's work, there is no satisfaction and no reward. Plagiarizing will never end up well for the individual who commits the crime, whether it be that they were caught this time or got off with it. I promise to never plagiarize on any of the work I do for this class because it is dishonest and wrong.

Sorry

My apologies for paragraph 2 being slightly distorted. Not sure what happened with this one.

Opposing arguments

Paragraph 1:
Crocodiles are majestic, powerful, and amazing creatures. Crocodiles are the rulers of the swamp, king of their respective food chain, and feared unanimously by the creatures of the world. At one moment a crocodile can be quietly and inconspicuously perusing the banks of a shore and then without warning the scene can become explosive and panicked. Crocodiles move with a grace unknown to lesser creatures of water and most of land. They fear no predator and attack anything intruding its personal boundaries. Crocodile's jaws are known to be one of the most inescapable locations in all of the world. The versatility and specialization of a crocodile's arsenal is unrivaled on any level. The often misunderstood behavior of being dinosaur-like vicious creatures with unnecessary aggressive behavior is a testament to its domination of the riverbanks for the past couple thousand years. That is a dynasty topping even the great Roman Empire.

Paragraph 2:
Crocodiles are ridiculous looking, silly, and lame creatures. These scaly creatures terrorize animals and humans all over the world. The look of a crocodile is both repulsive and humorous. Seriously folks, look at how dirty and grimy they are with the teeth hanging out of the mouth and

marsh muck falling from every limb. These things have become so ugly, we can laugh at them and take away all of the so called "fear factor" because it's near impossible to take such an awful appearance serious. Crocodiles spend most of the day doing nothing but slowly moving through murky water and laying on the bank sun tanning. Sun tanning! That is a useless activity even for civilized humans. Crocodiles do nothing but take up space in an otherwise peaceful ecosystem and give writers an opportunity to add a big scary monster to another teen thriller that won't be remembered ten days after the opening.

The message from this ad is very clear and straight-forward, Dos Equis is for interesting men. How this message is conveyed and the man behind the message are what makes this ad so powerful. To start with the audience, the message is to be read by anyone in the drinking community who takes pride in looking good (clean clothes, no wrinkles, well groomed). The assumption of the most interesting man in the world being the speaker gives credibility to the message immediately. Any well groomed man can appreciate some advice from the "most-interesting" man in the world. Now the most interesting and complex part of this ad is the message. The top layer of the message simply says that boring men wear pleated khakis and buy mild salsa. This satirical comment on boring men persuades the reader to not buy mild salsa and no wear pleated khakis. These are things that are associated with boring men and not the most interesting man in the world therefore we should strive to be more like our most interesting man in the world and not buy these items. On another note, there is an extreme level of credibility developed buy this message. The beautiful women, fine clothing, and cigar make the man seem very established and by adding Dos Equis into the mixture it takes in the social status of the fine clothes and cigar. These things develop Ethos for the reader. We trust this man. We trust what this man has to say. We trust that this is the most interesting man in the world. The end result from all of these peripheral factors is that buying Dos Equis makes you a more interesting man. We all want to be more interesting(stereotypically) and this will help us become that more interesting man.

Introducing Myself

Hello Mr. B and everyone else in our community online,
My name is Patrick Andrews and I am from Hilton Head, SC. I attended Hilton Head Prep in high school and played football, basketball, and baseball. I came to Clemson to play baseball and I hope it all works out, so far it seems to be a great decision. I am majoring in general engineering and staying in Clemson house during the summer. My other summer class is exploratory statistics 222. If anyone else is in that please let me know because all I know at this point is that I have a really long walk. I really enjoy being outside and just having a good time because that is what really matters anyway. Friends and family are extremely important to me and I always enjoy meeting new people. As I learned during our orientation social, I cannot bowl and am a less than stellar pool player. On the note of recently moving into a college dorm, I hate wrinkles in my clothes. They absolutely drive me crazy and I can't live with them. They make me feel like that guy who spilled food on his shirt and walks around for the whole day wondering if everyone notices that giant juice stain on his shirt or if he can sneak by without being shamed. And no one ever wants to be "that guy". In general, I'm an easy going guy and like to have fun. I always try and meet people and talk to them and just be courteous. At the moment, I am doing this in Vickery Hall and can't seem to find a picture of myself handy so I will be using a rough sketch. I hope this is applicable.

P.S. My picture wouldn't pop up in my blog so I will set it as my profile picture
